چکیده
The urban heat island effect is a critical factor for air quality management and public health in urbanized areas of New Jersey. This effect is related to an increase in temperatures in urban areas as compared to surrounding lower density rural sites. The overall goal of the project was to contribute to effective regional environmental management under conditions of climate change. The related objective of the project was to examine the interactions between future climate change, the urban heat island effect, and potential adaptation strategies. The project consisted of two parts, one focusing on the analysis of the urban heat island phenomenon in the greater Camden region, the other focusing on mitigation strategies for the urban heat island in the city of Camden and adjoining communities. The urban heat island was examined under current and projected climate conditions in the greater Camden, New Jersey, region through spatial analysis of remotely-sensed thermal data and statistical analysis of meteorological station data collected at six urban and suburban stations. Mitigation strategies for the urban heat island effect, including increased urban vegetation and lighter-colored surfacing, were explored using CITYgreenTM, a threshold GIS and modeling application developed by the American Forestry Association. This project in Camden is associated with the U.S. Global Change Research Program. Assessment of the Risk of Non-Cancerous Diseases under the Exposure of Heavy Element in Urban Areas and Troubleshooting Pollutant Sources (The Case of Zanjan)
Background: Heavy metals are the main air pollutants in cities. Therefore, assessment of the risk of exposure to these metals through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact on inhabitants of contaminated areas of the world is of great importance. Methods: A weekly sampling of air particles smaller than 10 microns was performed in a residential area of Zanjan for two years. Risk assessment i...
متن کاملA Prioritization Model for HSE Risk Assessment Using Combined Failure Mode, Effect Analysis, and Fuzzy Inference System: A Case Study in Iranian Construction Industry
The unavailability of sufficient data and uncertainty in modeling, some techniques, and decision-making processes play a significant role in many engineering and management problems. Attain to sure solutions for a problem under accurate consideration is essential. In this paper, an application of fuzzy inference system for modeling the indeterminacy involved in the problem of HSE risk assessm...
متن کاملPublic transport risk assessment through fault tree analysis
This study focused on the public transport risk assessment in District one of Tehran through Fault Tree Analysis involving the three criteria of human, vehicle and road in Haddon matrix. In fact, it examined the factors contributing to the occurrence of road accidents at several urban black spots within District 1. Relying on road safety checklists and survey of experts, this study made an ef...

Introduction: Monitoring and controlling water resources and using health risk assessment approaches for water pollutants are essential for health promotion programs. This study aims to determine the water quality status and its spatiotemporal variation across the Kan River Basin, explore the interrelationship between surface and groundwater quality indices, and assess the nitrate health risk i...
متن کاملRisk assessment and mitigation measures on the heavy metal polluted water and sediment of the Kolleru Lake in Andhra Pradesh, India
The Kolleru Lake is a famous Ramsar wetland of international significance. In this study heavy metal contents in water and sediment samples are reported. It is found that certain potentially toxic metal ions like chromium (4.5-80 µg/L), copper (1-20 µg/L), manganese (1-313 µg/L) and zinc (1.2-57 µg/L) are present in variable quantities in the lake water. When normalized with respect to concentr...
متن کاملAssessment of dental waste production rate and management in Sari, Iran
Dental offices produce a variety of dangerous wastes during normal business day. Most of these waste are non-hazardous that can be managed as household wastes; however, some component are hazardous and can pose a risk to human and the environment if discarded to Municipal Solid Wastes. These types of wastes must be managed separately. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the component...
